Aside from being a Birmingham landmark in the Jewellery Quarter, St Paul’s Church is at the centre of Birmingham’s last remaining Georgian Square and has significant architectural merit hence its Grade 1 listing.
Entrepreneurs Matthew Boulton and James Watt worshipped regularly here and it is believed that the classical composer Felix Mendelsohn once sought its famed acoustics. Nowadays, the square provides respite for many and a place to join friends and colleagues as well as being a green space within the urban sprawl.
Sadly, like most things, age has taken its toll on this stunning church. At almost 250 years old, the roof has come to the end of its life and needs replacing over the next two years or there is a real risk of flooding causing catastrophic damage to the building and its contents. Plans have been drawn up and the cost to replace the roof will be £660,000.
St Paul’s Church can’t do this alone, so we are appealing to individuals and businesses to come together in a community drive to save our church
St Paul’s Church has had an architect involved for the past 4 years and now has a fully worked up plan for repairing the roof. It will be a major construction project which will require scaffolding around the Church and building works for most of one year.
The Architect has costed the project and estimates that, at today’s prices, the cost will be £660,000.
The Church of England’s funds are woefully insufficient to pay for all church building repairs and developments. If it tried finance them, it would very quickly run out of money. Therefore it relies on each church to finance their own projects with the support of local businesses, individuals, and grant-making bodies.
If each business in the Jewellery Quarter was to support the appeal by donating just £1,000 then we’d be able to keep this community treasure watertight and open for future generations.
If you are willing to donate £1,000 but would like to spread the cost, we can arrange a direct debit for £100 a month for 10 months. If you would prefer to make a smaller donation, this will be much appreciated. If you can afford to give significantly more than £1,000, we would be happy to talk to you.
We also ask that you share our plight so that others can contribute. So when you donate, please share #RaisetheRoofStPauls on your social media pages so that others don’t miss out and can join in by supporting.
You can help spread the word generally by following us on social media and sharing our appeal with as many people as you can.
Also, consider a fundraising event, coffee morning or a dress down to work day that could involve a company or a team taking part in this community wide initiative. We want to keep our minds and our doors open.
